Bethlehem: The Holy Confluence of Three Religions
Bethlehem is believed to be the birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth and is auspicious to not only the Christians but also Jews and the Moslems. Situated about 6 miles from the holy city of Jerusalem, Bethlehem is the capital of Bethlehem Governorate of Palestinian National Authority.
The city itself dates back to pre-historic times when it was ruled by king Herod. The city’s architecture gives a glimpse of the bygone era with the old city situated within the Bethlehem and comprising eight quarters laid out in a mosaic style.
Amongst the most visited sites are the Church of Nativity(birthplace of Christ), the Shrine of Rachel(where Prophet Mohammed prayed), museums like the Badd Gicaman, Baituna-alk-Talhami, International Museum of Nativity and The Crib of Nativity Theatre & Museum that offers visitors 3d models depicting the significant stages of life of Jesus.

The period between October to December is the most visited part of the year, Christmas being the peak time followed by Easter, Feast of Saint George & Feast of Saint Eliza. Christmas is celebrated here with super zeal. The processions pass through the Magner Square and the Catholic services take place in St. Catherine’s Church. Local shepherds can be seen tending their flocks in the same area where Christ was born.
So it’s no wonder that tourism accounts for approximately 65% of the city’s economy which is further supported by the presence of around 30 hotels, Jacir Palace being one of the oldest and the best. Food and lodging isn’t a problem here, for sure.

Apart from praying and sight-seeing, one can also indulge in shopping in over 300 handicraft works shops and others selling Middle Eastern spices, jewelry & other oriental sweets such as baklava. Olive wood carving and mother of pearl art is one of the major sought after art here. It is also a centre for embroidery, embroiderers producing a strong overall effect of colors and metallic brilliance.
Inhabited by around 27,000 people, including Jews, Christians and Moslems , Bethlehem has embodied hope in the minds of the mankind and its shrines provide a guiding light illuminating our mind and spirit. One should indeed visit this place at least once in his/her lifetime and light a candle here for “Peace to Prevail on Earth”.
