Male, Maldives

Known as the Sultan’s island in the past, Malé is the capital of Maldives. It occupies the entire islet of Malé. Spread over and area of 1.77 sq km with over 80,000 people crammed onto it, Male is one of the world’s densest cities.

There is so much to do here. And water is a non-skippable part of it. Almost everything centers on the water activities and I don’t think you are going to regret it. Cruising is probably the most enjoyable activity. You can be a part of the natural charisma and experience the wonders enshrined in and within the seas and lagoons here. The sparkling reefs, lavish fauna and flora would leave permanent impressions in your mind. Get engrossed and enchanted as you set about to snorkel, dive, and fish, windsurf or just sit on the deck and enjoy the panoramic view. The ambience at sunset what with the rainbow studded sky looming in the distant horizon with, seabirds flying against it is breathtakingly beautiful. To complete it all just dine under the starry sky. Your palette would be filled with sea-food like fresh tuna or barracuda with salads and fresh fruits. Yummy!

Make sure you choose the right boat and travel light… Most cruises have a wonderful chef. All safaris have excellent and experienced diving instructors and many of them are multi-linguistic. The Maldives Islands are a must go for those who enjoy Scuba Diving and a shrine for marine biologists. Diving schools and the services of professional diving instructors are easily available. There are numerous diving sites with some being ranked among the best in the world. Popular Maldives Scuba Diving Sites are: Wreck of the Maldives Victory (Ship Wreck), Banana Reef, Shark Point, and Barracuda Giri

If you wish to explore the countryside you would need a vehicle. A safari boat (a live aboard vessel where all your needs are catered) is what you need if you wish to explore the mainland island. . Reaching here is pretty easy. There are a large number of scheduled airlines and chartered airlines which operate flights to and from the Maldives on a regular basis There is only one international airport in the Maldives which is Male’ International Airport built on the island of Hulhule (just over a kilometer from Male’). Male’ International Airport is well connected to all major world cities. Once here you can stay at hotels in the city, or resorts or book space for yourself on the cruise. The choice is exclusively yours. Transport here is very well managed.

In the city, the sights to see are Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiiy) which has rich intricate carvings with Arabic writings and ornamental patterns. Sad that non-Muslims are not allowed inside except by permission. Do visit the Islamic centre and the Independence Square (Jumhooree Maidan). It is the hub of political activities here and is highly secured.
