Mahabaleshwar and Matheran, the new year-end hotspots

The entire country is still coming to terms with the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. One month on, the year-end is fast approaching and many have not selected Goa as their new-year destination. This may come as a surprise to few but not for Mumbaikars and people living in other parts of Maharashtra.  Post attacks, there were quite a few reports floating in the media about Goa being the next target on Al-Qaeda’s list, owing to its long and unprotected coastline. The Intelligence units of various states and the Centre confirmed this fact, that al-Qaeda over the past year has threatened to carry out a Bali type bombing in Goa. The famous beach parties will be curbed this year by Goa Police to ensure safety of travelers from across the globe and Indians too. Interestingly, Mahabaleshwar and Matheran are competing with Goa this year to grab the New Year hot-spot prize. These two destinations have and will see a lot of travelers during this winter.

Apart from this factor, the apprehension of an attack in Goa added with the pleasant winter will be delightful for the travelers. The Scarlett Keeling case ensured closure of shacks at midnight on the beaches, while the reports of an attack on New Year have given an impetus to the Goa police to be extra vigilant and avoid any major gatherings and beach parties. Besides, Mahabaleshwar and Matheran ensure smaller holes in the wallets and more fun overall. The hotels at these two destinations have experienced heavier booking than ever and are even providing attractive packages to further the footfall.
